The Origin of Chemise |
|
| The name camisole
tunic comes from two historical garments – camisole and tunic.
Camisole is an 18th century women undergarment that women wore to protect
their bodies and corsets from dirt and sweat. Tunic is coming from an
Ancient Greece in a name of chiton – a long rectangular-shape linen
or wool shirt, fastened with fibula or brooch at shoulders and belt at
the waist. Ancient Romans renamed chiton to tunic and wore it on the
constant basis as an undergarment. Today camisole tunic or chemise is a loose-fitting, sleeveless, shirt-like top. There are a great variety of chitons in Kohls Coupons. Chemise is usually made of natural cotton or silk, both of which are water absorbent, light, durable, and soft. Being water absorbent, means an ability to stabilize one’s body temperature when it is either hot or cold. Therefore, cotton or silk camisole tunic will warm a woman when she is cold and cool her down when she is sweating from hot temperatures. Next, the thinness of these two materials contributes to the easier airflow between one’s body and fresh air. In addition, light silk and cotton chemises can be worn under other clothes for more warmth and comfort. As far as durability, both cotton and silk are considered to be pretty durable materials. For example, cotton compare to the man-made rayon fabric, can be bent 3,000 times without braking compare to only 75 times for rayon. Finally, softest types of cotton and silk fabrics are used for the creation of chemises, making it an ultimate undergarment and summer-wear for women. Overall, according to the Cotton, Inc., cotton is the single best selling fiber in America, outselling all man-made fibers combined. Because of the openness, lightness, absorbency, and durability characteristics of this garment, camisole tunic can be worn as an undergarment, lingerie, summer tee, or sport tee. Chiton is a proud ancestor of a camisole tunic, because it was first invented by the ancient Greeks some two and a half thousand years ago. |
